My Trip to Table Mountain and The Cape of Good Hope

I've been back a whole month, but my spirit is still soaring from my South Africa Adventure! I am so in love with that place...
March 26th found my friends and me headed to Table Mountain, and what a day that was! The weather could not have been better as Craig, our guide and friend told us, there are about 5 really clear days like we experienced, and it was truly divine! The ride up the mountain was an adventure in itself, aboard the cable cars with the rotating floors- 360% views and an amazing feat to mankind.
The cable car project was first put into action in 1913 or round about, and because of war and other man made  problems, was put off until it was resuscitated in 1929! Since then, over 16 million people have taken the ride to the top of this Majestic Mountain to inhale the Beauty of the scenery and the moment. I cannot say it better than the pictures we took, so...

Scenes from the top!

Guess who else has experienced this?
"Illustrious visitors include British royalty King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II as well as Prince Andrew. Oprah Winfrey, Sting, Stefi Graf, Arnold Schwarzenneger,  Margaret Thatcher" ... and many more!

http://tablemountain.net/blog/entry/celebrities_on_table_mountain/

You should really experience this for yourself. It is AWESOME!!!

We then traveled down the coast to the Cape of Good Hope- the day was perfect in every way- beautiful weather, good friends, no worries, as we were totally enjoying the day.

The drive down the coast is absolutely stunning!

Our group at The Cape of Good Hope

Looking over the vast amount of water, seeing where the Atlantic Ocean kisses the Indian Ocean is pretty potent stuff... Take your family, take your friends... your life will never be the same... only Better!

Let's make this happen for you!

South Africa Winelands- Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

"Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life's most civilized pleasures."
--- Michael Broadbent

On my South Africa Journey, 24 March 2011 found my illustrious group and me visiting the gorgeous town of Stellenbosch, in the Heart of the Cape Winelands. Only a half hour's drive from Cape Town, the "Town of Oaks" is surrounded by some of the most beautiful wine estates in the world.

Stellenbosch Wine Route is the oldest in the country, and is truly a paradise for any gastronomy- lover! The scenery is breath-taking and the choices are endless, with something for every budget. Stellenbosch is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, only second to Cape Town, and is filled with stunning architecture, with many buildings dating back to the 1700's, rich history, museums, as well as many lovely B&B's, hotels and restaurants.

It is also home of Stellenbosch University, from whence a number of the beloved Rugby Springboks have emerged. There are beautiful boutiques, galleries, and many street vendors featuring their personal African crafts like hand-carved animals, beaded work, hand-made clothing, and more. I met a wonderfully talented artist who makes plaques representing the townships- a very authentic South African art form. I cherish my piece of real African memorabilia, as well as my hand-carved Giraffe I purchased from another special vendor.

Back to the subject at hand- Wine and Food!

We had the pleasure of partaking in a special lunch at the Bread and Wine Restaurant, part of the Moreson Wine Farm, and it was awe-inspiring! Chef Neil Jewell, the "Charcuterie Guru" prepared an astonishing array of his meats, along with cheeses, olives and breads, topped off with the lovely "Hoity Toity" white wine, named after the family pet! Here is an excerpt from the Moreson Vineyard website,

http://www.moreson.co.za - all I can say is, Go Visit This Place!! And buy wine!

"Miss Molly, the beautiful Môreson Weimaraner, is the love of our lives. During the afternoon Miss Molly is most often found sunning herself in our finest leather wingback chair. Here she devotes her time to relaxing - receiving visitors, love and adoration at her leisure. Hoity Toity is designed to capture the taste of our beloved Miss Molly’s lazy, sun-filled afternoons."

More from the website:

"Miss Molly, the Môreson Weimaraner, is such a huge presence in our lives that we felt she deserved her own range of wines. Her larger than life personality, her unique quirks and her naughty nature ensure that she is a love magnet. When food goes missing, from the kitchen, or the farm starts to look like it's being remodeled by a landscaper - with a love of meter-deep holes - you can be sure that Miss Molly is somehow involved.

All the Miss Molly wines have been designed to capture the fun, and good-natured naughtiness, that we believe makes our Miss Molly so incredibly easy to love. A portion of the money made from every bottle of Miss Molly sold - in South Africa - is donated to the

South African Guide Dogs association for the blind."

What can I say that is good enough about people like this?? Anyway, the wine, food and atmosphere is superb and memorable... especially when shared with friends, as we did, and the time spent there was wonderful.

We then moved on down the road to Franschhoek, founded in 1688 by the French Huguenots, and another beautiful village nestled in the fertile wine valley of the Cape Winelands. We were guests at Le Quartier Francais, listed as one of "The Worlds 50 Best Restaurants 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 - Restaurant Magazine UK". Enough said? We toured the property, enjoyed mouth-watering deserts and the ambiance of this stunning and intimate piece of Heaven before heading back to town for another full evening of delight!

This day satisfied, right down to the ground, every fiber that makes us want to be one with nature, and all things sensuous and beautiful. I am counting the days until I can return to this God-kissed country. Bless you, all my new friends...

I LOVE SOUTH AFRICA!

South Africa- Amy Biehl Foundation

As I have said in my previous blogs about my latest adventure, South Africa is sensuous, grand, and diverse, with a sultry vibe that is intoxicating! There is so much to do in this fascinating country, that it would take several visits to really experience everything it has to offer, if that is possible, even for those who call it home.
One of the most memorable experiences we shared while in South Africa March 22-31 2011, was our visit to the Amy Biehl Foundation. The story behind this organization is an inspiring one of pure forgiveness, and an unselfish display of Loving Thy Neighbor.
In 1993, Amy was a Stanford graduate and a Fullbright exchange scholar who was on a 10-month study at The University of  Western Cape Community Law Center. The following is an excerpt from the website listed below.
"She helped to develop voter registration programs for South African blacks and women as that nation's first all-race elections approached in April, 1994. On August 25, 1993... just three days before she was to return to the US... while Amy was driving three black colleagues back to Cape Town's Guguletu Township, a group of youths pelted her car with stones and forced it to stop. Dozens of young men then surrounded the car repeating the militant Pan Africanist Congress chant, "One settler [white person], one bullet!" Amy was then pulled from the car, struck in the head with a brick as she tried to flee, and then beaten and stabbed in the heart while she lay on the ground. During the attack, Amy's black friends yelled that she was a "comrade" and friend of black South Africa to no avail. Amy was carried back to the car after the attack by her friends who then drove her to the nearest police station where she died. Amy was 26 years old at the time of her murder. " 1
But Amy did not die in vain, as is so evident at the Amy Biehl Foundation, which was set up by her parents.
"Amy's parents developed the Amy Biehl Foundation so that their daughter's death might produce life in South Africa through prisoner rehabilitation programs, literacy training and job skills instruction. "How do we link arms in friendship and do something?" Mr. Biehl asked a hushed room of journalists during a press conference in South Africa. "We, the Amy Biehl Foundation, are willing to do our part as catalysts for social progress. Are you, the community of South Africa, prepared to do your part? It is one thing to kill people in the name of freedom and justice; quite another to day-after-day build a country of educated and responsible citizens through education and leadership. We shall see how South Africa chooses her future."  1

"
Amy's legacy is how she led her life. Hers is a legacy of inspiration, not tragedy. Amy was an extraordinary example of dedication, perseverance, courage, and compassion. She lived her life to the fullest, never accepting failure in any of her pursuits. It was her goal to become the best and to use her talents to improve the world. She believed it was her duty, as a person afforded opportunity and education, to actively seek social change for those not so fortunate. It was her dedication and courage that continues to inspire so many people throughout the world.
Amy's legacy lives inside so many people. It drives her mother to continue her work and flourishes among the staff of the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust in Cape Town. Her legacy has inspired young people in the United States and has been a source of opportunity to thousands of South African youth. Amy's legacy thrives in the hearts of all of us who knew her and thousands of people she never met who have been inspired by her story. Perhaps most amazingly, her legacy lives through two men who played a big role in her death. Today, Ntobeko Peni and Easy Nofemela spread Amy's legacy throughout their community in South Africa. It is their transformation that truly represents the powerful legacy of Amy Biehl. Their transformation is what Amy was working for." 2

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by some of the students with a wonderful musical presentation, and a real sense of excitement that we were there to interact with them.

We were able to visit several classrooms, learn a few dances and songs and make new friends, as our hearts were made bigger. The Amy Biehl Foundation operates after school care programs throughout the Cape Flats, and offers art, music and sports opportunities for the children in many townships. They also have first aid and CPR training, and HIV/Aids Peer Education. The work that is being done here should be an example to the rest of the world of the possibilities to bring about social change and help the less fortunate, as we embrace one another and work together for justice and equality.
The Amy Biehl Foundation is in dire need of financial assistance, and you can visit the foundation's website listed below to see how you can give back. Also, when we book a trip through Lion World Tours, a portion goes to the Amy Biehl Foundation. As part of your vacation, we can arrange for you to visit as well, and become a part of this inspiring organization.
Our visit to the Amy Biehl Foundation changed my life, and inspired me to be more socially active, with a desire to not just recognize problems, but be part of the solution. I hope this brief description of my experience will inspire you, as well.

Cape Town South Africa- Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa Review

South Africa really is the "Rainbow Nation", with so many contrasts in her diverse locations and landscapes.  Whether you enjoy majestic mountains, breathtaking ocean views, observing wildlife right outside your door, or partaking of the cosmopolitan city life, South Africa has it all! The South Africa Tourism slogan is "A World in One Country", and it really is true.

My second day in Cape Town, South Africa held so many incredible surprises that caressed my senses and uplifted my Spirit! We took a trip through the stunning Winelands in the morning and visited the Amy Biehl Foundation in the afternoon. Both of these experiences were awe-inspiring, and are deserving of their own blog entries, which will be coming soon.

After a very full day of living South Africa, we freshened up and headed down the Atlantic Coast to the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, one of the "Leading Hotels of the World", and part of the family run collection of boutique Red Carnation Hotels. This property was voted the "Best Hotel in Cape Town" in 2010, by Travel and Leisure USA. The drive and scenery reminded me of the Southern coast of California- so beautiful!
The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa  is nestled inside an incredibly lovely natural sanctuary that is a World Heritage Site, though it is only 15 minutes from the vibrant city of Cape Town!
The hotel  has 14 classic rooms with private patios overlooking the gardens, 11 mountain-facing rooms with views of the spectacular Twelve Apostles Mountain Range, 21 Luxury rooms, 9 Superior Sea-facing rooms, 12 one bedroom suites, 2 Garden suites and a Presidential suite. All of the rooms and suites have breathtaking views of the mountains, gardens and ocean.

The dining is unparallelled, using home grown vegetables and herbs from their very own garden, and they offer cooking demonstrations and wine tastings for your pleasure.
The hotel houses two heated pools, a cinema, a fitness room and a business center. They also have a "helistop" with helicopter transfers and sightseeing tours upon request. There are beautiful trails and mountain walks to enjoy at your leisure, and they will even prepare a picnic basket for you to take along! There is a complimentary shuttle service to the V&A Waterfront between 8 am and 8 pm, so you can have the best of both worlds- the romance and grandeur of this stunning oceanfront property where you can view whales and dolphins, and the excitement of Cape Town.

Lion World Tours, my favorite South Africa Partner,  has some amazing packages that include this gorgeous property. Take a look at this option and let me make this happen for you! Don't just Dream South Africa, Experience South Africa for yourself! I will, again and again!

There is a wonderful, sunny patio with a Koi pond that is a perfect place to enjoy a meal, drinks and good conversation. The Clipper Restaurant offers a variety of dining options from an extensive breakfast buffet to a diverse a la carte menu, and mouth-watering deserts. The hotel also has its Commodore House Wine Collection, as well as a large selection of sherries, brandies and cognacs. The backdrop of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, the white gabled Cape Dutch homesteads and the oak-lined streets and lanes all blend in to give this place a charm that will not be quickly forgotten. See some of the wine estates that were developed by early settlers who produced the wines sought after by Napoleon, Bismark and royalty such as Edward VII. Stop for a wine-tasting on an estate, where you will have the opportunity to purchase some of the wines.

Cape Town South Africa Table Bay Hotel Review

South Africa, is an intoxicating mix of sleek, sexy cosmopolitan and raw, sensuous, primitive emerging cultures, and she has won my heart and warmed my soul. Never have I been so moved by any destination as I was by this amazing country. This seventeen year old democracy, still in its infancy, is making tremendous strides toward advancement for all her people, while maintaining the right to be unique, in the warm, sultry way that is strictly South Africa. "The oppressor and the oppressed have come together to chart the road to a Democratic South Africa." 1

Enough heavy handed words- it is more than a bucket list experience- it is life-changing! Never have I been affected by a trip as I was this one. The people are warm, inviting, fun-loving, and altogether charming. There is a vibration throughout that is sultry, and untamed, while inviting passersby to become a part of the magic. This country has everything anyone could ask for in a vacation destination, and more! Gorgeous beaches, rugged countryside, wild bush areas, which include some of the most plush and romantic reserves imaginable- just ask the Bachelor- cosmopolitan cities that include fabulous dining, shopping, and entertainment; and beautiful, loving people! I was literally wowed every single day! There is so much to share that I am going to break it down into several blogs, beginning with The Table Bay Hotel Review in Cape Town. This is going to take me several weeks to share everything I have to share, but it will be so worth it, and I hope, will leave you craving more- then we can get to the business of getting you there! Believe me, it is a wonderful value for your dollar, and there are so many itinerary options through my partners that will amaze and delight you.

A word to the sponsors of my trip- Lion World Tours, Thank You from the bottom of my now bigger heart! I had the privilege of interviewing the heads of these companies, and those interviews will be included in coming blogs. Absolutely amazing people with incredible vision for their country, and I am proud to now be a part of it!

My traveling companions and I were split up into several hotels- The Table Bay Hotel, a Leading Hotel of the World, The Commodore Hotel, 15 On Orange, and The 12 Apostles Hotel and Spa. We visited each property, did site inspections, enjoyed the fabulous food and entertainment, and learned that each one has its own unique attitude and flavor, which I will share with you. I resided at The Table Bay Hotel in a lovely, inviting suite with a balcony that overlooked Table Bay and Table Mountain.

This hotel has 329 rooms and sits right on the V&A Waterfront, in close proximity to the area shops, bars and restaurants. It is definitely 5 star accommodations and the Atlantic Restaurant has one of the best breakfast buffets I have ever had the privilege of enjoying. The following pictures do not even encompass one half of the options!

Yes, those are fresh oysters, about 10 different kinds of yogurt, breads, fish, meats, hot dishes, grains, juices, and on and on!

There are lounges, a conservatory and bar, along with a beautiful pool and a wonderful fitness area. The staff is friendly, professional and very efficient, and their aim is to please. The outside patio is a perfect place to enjoy a meal, drinks, or just soak up the sights and sounds of the bay.  It has a business center with internet access, and it is also connected to a beautiful shopping mall. This is a perfect location to call home base while you take in all that Cape town has to offer, which I will go into after the hotel reviews.

Ready to go now? I am here to help make it happen for you! Until my next blog...dream South Africa!

Internet Travel or Travel Pro

I was talking with a friend of mine, and she asked me how I compete with the big online travel sites and internet travel? I think she was playing the "Devil's Advocate" because she used to book her travel there too, but is now a loyal client of My Savvy Vacation! This is one of my favorite questions, and easy to answer. I would like to compare internet travel to a travel pro.

INTERNET TRAVEL

When somebody goes to the internet for vacation ideas, they will find a world of information, with thousands of options. People who use internet travel will find that prices are usually very reasonable and the booking process is pretty easy. However, it can take hours wading through all of that information, often leaving the shopper with an uneasy feeling, and there is not a warm body to talk with who will offer objective, professional advice. If you contact the call centers of the big sites, the people who answer the phones are not travel professionals, but are merely there to answer very basic questions, and they are usually located on the other side of the world. If you call the vendors directly, the phone personnel may have some travel knowledge, but they are being paid by that vendor, so the opinions offered may not be very objective.

When shopping on the internet, images of and information about destinations, resorts, and hotels may or may not be accurate, and many people have been sorely disappointed when, upon their arrival to what they thought was going to be the perfect vacation spot, they discover too late that they were mislead.

TRAVEL PRO

As an independent agent, not tied to any one supplier, I offer objective advice to my clients, focusing on what they truly want rather than trying to sell them on any one destination or resort. I am also a world traveler and I bring first hand knowledge of the places I sell to the discussion. I do the research for my clients, saving them hours of frustration and confusion, and I handle all of the details, such as travel protection, excursions, reservations, transfers, etc.

I am available before, during and after their vacation, giving my client peace of mind and a feeling of security. Another important point is that I can usually get the same prices as the internet offers, and I utilize the internet for much of what I do, but with my training, experience and first-hand knowledge, I know how to use it to my client's advantage, making him a winner!

CONCLUSION

I think internet travel is a great resource, and many people are very well traveled and like doing it themselves. It is also a great place to do some preliminary searching, but when it comes to your precious time away, why not trust a professional who is there for you, making sure your vacation is everything you want it to be!

Client Profile- Whom Do I Serve?

While I was reviewing my client base, and organizing files, I was encouraged to put together a couple of Client Profile Personas.

As a Vacation Consultant who offers a high level of customer service, I have two main personas that I cater to.

Luxury

The first is middle-aged, wealthy, and married or in a serious relationship. This client usually likes to repeat their favorite vacation experience, such as a high-end all-inclusive, a luxury spa, an upscale cruise, or a European Vacation.

Romantic

The second prominent group I serve is honeymooners, and romantic couples, young to middle-aged. They tend to prefer beach destinations, with lots of options for fun and activities such as zip-lining and scuba diving. They also appreciate good food and pampering.

The reasons to travel really are endless, and whatever your reasons are, I would love the opportunity to offer you Savvy Service and Advice!
